The who even sort of perlexs is me. I was raised Catholic and my family's Catholic and I can't see them or their church acting like this. I mean the host is very important to them and they do everything they can to make sure NO bits of it are ever "desecrated" but desecration is like throwing it in the trash. Ideally all blessed wafers are eaten or stored safely away, but when that's not possible we do bury them or put them down a sink that drains to a near by field.
Also burning a Eucharist isn't out of the realm of reasonable disposal. Pretty much any disposal that acknowledges the "divinity" of said wafer works in a pinch. A priest could have said a blessing over the Eucharist that was stolen and that would have made the whole thing acceptable. Not ideal or necissarily right, but it would have been he most proper disposal for the Eucharist as possible and that would have made it ok.
